中国自由主义文学思潮是随着中国资本主义一定程度的发展，随着启蒙运动对西方自由主义民主思想和文学观的引进，以及中国的自由主义社会政治和文化运动的兴起而诞生、发展的。然而，现代中国并不是自由主义文学的独唱，它只是启蒙大合唱中的一个声部。很难判断哪一个阐述自由主义文学理念的先哲就一定是一个纯粹的自由主义者，反之，也很难判断与自由主义文学思潮站在对立面上针锋相对论争的文学家就与自由主义文学思潮毫无瓜葛；是与不是的判断相对而言都未免武断。 胡适与周作人在“五四”新文化运动中坚持自由主义文化、文学价值观，把自由主义价值观引向文学。他们是中国现代自由主义文学最初的理论奠基者。鲁迅与胡适、周作人是同一战阵中的战友，只不过鲁迅所理解的自由主义的具体内容和主要由留学欧美的自由主义知识分子阵营所理解的自由主义有所不同，但在自由主义核心理念“个人自由”理解上并无不同。鲁迅对自由主义的思考更注重人的因素。考察鲁迅与自由主义知识分子之间的论争不应从其中一个方面的角度去观察、分析问题，从而把鲁迅与自由主义文学思潮之间的关系简单化。鲁迅对自由主义知识分子的批评并不是在信念上，而是在于他们对自由主义的实践上的空泛与不切实际。承认这一点，就比较容易理解鲁迅与自由主义文学思潮之间的复杂关系。
The Chinese Liberalism Literature Thoughts were born and developed with the development of the Chinese capitalism in a certain extent, the introducing of the western liberalism democracy ideas and literature thoughts by the enlightening movement, and the rising up of Chinese liberalism society polity and culture movement. However, liberalism literature was not the vocal solo in modern China, but a voice part of the enlightening movement chorus. It"s hard to judge which of those sages who expatiate liberalism literature thoughts was a pure liberalist, and vice versa. The judgment to say yes of no is often an arbitrary decision.Hu Shi and Zhou Zuoren persisted in liberalism culture and literature value thought in the "five-four" new culture movement, and brought it to literature. They were the founders of Chinese modern liberalism literature. Lu Xun was the comrade-in-arms of them. Though the liberalism Lu Xun comprehended was different from the one Hu and Zhou comprehended, they were accordant in the comprehending of the core idea of liberalism: individual freedom. Lu Xun thought more of human. We should not simplify the relationship between Lu Xun and liberalism literature thoughts by observing from a unilateral aspect. The difference between Lu Xun and the liberalism intellectual was not in faith. Lu Xun criticized them because of their being vague, general and unpractical in practice. This point being acknowledged, it"ll be easier for us to find out the complex relationship between Lu Xun and liberalism literature.
