The systems using Reed-Solomon codes include: storage device (including tape, compact disk, DVD, barcode, etc), wireless communication system, DVB (Digital Video Broadcast), high speed modem such as ADSL and xDSL.DVD is an optical storage medium with large capacity. The DVD technology has wide range of applications from entertainment to computer applications. DVD technology plays an important role in digital technology. One complete DVD product must have two main chips: servo chip and MPEG-II decoding chip. The function of MPEG-II decoding chip is to decode the MPEG-II encoded data. The function of servo chip is to transform the optical signal to electrical signal and then to the MPEG-II encoded data. The servo chip is complex. It includes three parts: analog, digital and firmware. Reed-Solomon decoder plays an important role in the digital parts.FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) is the result based on PAL, GAL and EPLD. It is used as a semi-customized circuit. It solves both the default of the customized circuit and the limit of gate in the original programmable device. The role of FPGA in IC design is to provide hardware verification of IC function.The Reed-Solomon decoder is an important module in whole servo chip. After introducing the mathematic fundament of Reed-Solomon code, Reed-Solomon decoding theory and algorithm are explained. Then illuminate the implementation and verification of FPGA.
