This passage will inquire into the cause of her tragedy from a social point of view. In this passage, we can know the tragedy of Tess takes shape from a social developing procession, in which the traditional society exterminated and the bourgeois society had a victory. Tess"s death is a typical representative of the misfortune of the peasants because of the bourgeois invading. Her miserable life reflects all kinds of sufferings of the impoverished peasants who have to turn workers. The cause of the tragedy of Tess has something to do not only with economy and class but also with ethics, religion and law. Her economic and class position determines her being oppressed by bourgeois ethics, religion and law. As a pure and kind girl, Tess was destroyed by bourgeois decayed ethics, hypocritical religion and unfair law; still her tragedy comes from her own bourgeois ethics and religion to a certain extent. Besides, Her tragedy still lies in some other factors. Considering Tess herself, as a pure girl of the peasant nature, her choices go beyond bougeois society, which naturally leads to her tragedy. In themeanwhile, her tragedy has something to do with two bourgeois men--AngelClare who was always struggling in contradictory between ideal and reality and egoism Alec D"urberville.
