It reaches the conclusion that the nature of trtiimlation is communication. Such a conclusion is reached out of a truth---people always do something new out of a need, without which human civilization can go nowhew. The same is true of communication. There is always a purpose involved in both intral ingual communication and interlingual communication. The activity of translation arises out of a necessity for overcoming the barriers in communication. This is especially true of interlingual communication. Translation itself serves the purpose of effective communication. As both translation and communication are indispensable constituents of language, this paper employs a linguistic approach to understand the nature of translation. The research over functions of language offers an insight into the purpose of communication. in practical application of language, different functions are steered by the communication purpose. Language, as the channel in linguistic communication, is sometimes blocked to a certain extent. This ultimately results in communication barrier. To overcome the barrier, translation is introduced in the communication process. As the nature of language is basic to study further linguistic communication, a detailed analysis of the nature of language is made first, and then the nature of translation is explored. Chapter One offers a brief introduction to the thesis. Chapter Two deals with the nature of language. In this Chapter, origin, definition, and functions of language are dealt with in detail. Chapter Three is on language communication. Communication Process, Communication Features, Context and Communication, and two major types of Language Communication are carefully studied. Chapter Four explores the topic of ranslation Means Communication.? Language, culture, translatability, and relativity of translatability are the main conceptions to be covered for an adequate elucidation of the thesis. At the end of Chapter Four, the conclusion is reached that translation means communication. Chapter Five is the conclusion of this paper.
