宋代是我国历史上经济社会发展极为迅速的一个时期，广东的经济也获得了长足的进步。宋代中央政府比较重视经营广东。经过调整州县，宋代广东政区的划分趋于合理，并保持大体的稳定，有助于实施有效的统治和开发。由于北方移民的大量南迁，广东各地人口总体呈现增多态势，不少州县更激增十倍以上。移民提供了比以往充裕得多的劳动力，也带来了北方先进的生产技术。农业方面，水利设施大量修建，珠三角等地大片海涂、沙滩被改造成良田，粤东、粤西的垦殖范围有了进一步的拓展；先进农具得到逐步地推广，优良作物品种种植面积有较多的增加，广州、英德府、潮州、惠州等地成为稻米输出地。手工业方面，铜冶业一度在全国独占鳌头，陶瓷业满足了日常生活需要并大量出口，造船业空前繁荣，为广州外贸的勃兴提供了坚实的保障。海内外交通比以往更发达和便捷，中外商人齐聚广州，多国商品云集，各地物产荟萃。有宋一代，大量流人被贬广东，其中的不少人注意体恤民情，发展生产和改良生产技术，为社会经济文化的进步起到了推进作用。经过宋代的发展，以广州为中心的珠三角逐步超越粤北，成为全省的经济中心。
In Song Dynasty, society and economy had a fast development, especially economy in Guangdong Province. Through adjusting prefecture and county, the distribution of its administrative area became rational and the stabilization of its" administrative area contributed to the effective government and exploitation. Because of the immigration from the north area, the population had an increasing trend. The population in some counties was ten times than before. The immigrant made the labor sources more abundant than before and brought some advanced production technology. In agriculture, a great number of irrigation systems were build. Lots of seacoast and beach in Peal River Delta were constructed to fertile land. The scope of the agriculture land in the east and west of Guangdong had a great spread. More and more people used advanced agriculture tools. The proportion of excellent crop breed had a great increase. Canton, Yingdefu, Chaozhou, Huizhou became the main export areas of rice. In handcraft industry, copper smelt industry in Guangdong was the champion of the country. Ceramic industry not only met the need of this country also the international markets. Ship making industry boomed unparallelly in history that accelerated the foreign trade. The transportation of inside and outside became advanced and convenient. The businessmen who went to Canton came from all over the world. All kind of commodities could be seen. Special local products gathered together. In a period of Dynasty Song, many exiles were sent to Guangdong. Some of them showed solicitude for the people and improved technology, which had an impact on the advance of the society, economy and culture. After the development of Dynasty Song, Pearl River Delta which heart was Canton surpassed the north of Guangdong and became the economic center of this province.
