本文考察了康拉德的两部早期小说《阿尔迈耶的痴愚》与《海隅逐客》,并侧重探讨了康拉德笔下马来人物形象的建构。根据里蒙-凯南的人物刻画理论,故事中的人物形象是一种建构,它是读者根据散布于文本中的种种标志拼凑或重构起来的。这些文本中的人物形象标志分为两类:直接解说(即小说叙述者和其他人物对马来人物的评价)和间接表现(即马来人物自身的言语与行为等)。本文拟从这两方面入手来探讨马来人物形象在康拉德小说中的建构,并由此观照作家本人的文化视野和立场。 除了引言和结束语之外,本文分为四章。引言部分介绍了本文的选题缘起、前人的研究成果、本文的切入角度与研究目标。第一章致力于研究东西方不同视野中的马来人物形象,表明欧洲白人和马来人自己对巴巴拉蚩及其同伙有绝然不同的界定。在欧洲白人的视野中,巴巴拉蚩及其同伙是“满船的海盗”,而在马来人自己的眼中,他们是“聪明勇敢的人”。第二章集中研究马来人、尤其是巴巴拉蚩的行为。以巴巴拉蚩为代表的马来“海盗”与欧洲士兵的交火是他们反抗欧洲白人入侵的起点。他们意识到敌人的长处和自己的短处,采取迂回的方式,策划了一个阴谋,成功而机智地把欧洲自人赶出了森巴,由此颠覆了白人优越的神话。第三章主要探讨马来人物的话语。康拉德赋予了笔下的马来人物话语权利,而他们话语所表述的内容与表述的方式都折射出了言说者的形象。他们不再是“失语”的“他者”,而是富于反叛精神的战略家。基于前面讨论的诸种人物性格标志,第四章以巴巴拉蚩为例,指出康拉德笔下的马来人物形象充满了矛盾,这种人物形象的矛盾性反映了康拉德本人意识形态立场的不确定性。最后是论文的结束语部分,通过简要地总结本文的观点回答了引言中提出的问题。
This thesis attempts to examine the construction of Malay image by analyzing Conrad"s characterization of the Malay characters in his two early novels: Almayer"s Folly and An Outcast of the Island. According to Rimmon-Kenan"s theoretical framework of characterization, the image of character is a construct, put together or reconstructed by the readers from various indicators dispersed throughout the text. Thess textual indicators are categorized into two basic types: direct definition (including the judgment and comment from the narrator or different characters) and indirect representation (the external appearance, the action and speech of Malay characters). Based on the two types of character indicators, this thesis aims to explore the construction of Malay image which, in an important way, mirrors Conrad"s cultural vision and ideological stand.This thesis is composed of four chapters, along with an introduction and a conclusion. The Introduction introduces briefly the background and motivation for the writing of this thesis. Chapter One is devoted to the study of the Malay image in different eyes. The European whites and Malay natives have competing definitions and comments about Balatchi and his Malay companions. Chapter Two focuses on the actions of Malay characters, especially those of Babalatchi. The Malay pirates" confrontation with the European men-of-war is the starting point of the Malay conspiratorial resistance against the European intruders. As a result, they manage to oust the Europeans, and thus subvert the imperial myth. Chapter Three deals with the Malay voice, which is a combination of content and form of the characters" speech. Conrad grants Malay "pirates" a voice of their own, so what they say and the way they say project the image of the speakers. Based on the character indicators discussed in the preceding chapters, Chapter Four points out the ambivalences of the Malay image, which reflects Conrad"s ideological uncertainty. The Conclusion answers the questions posed in the Introduction by summarizing the main points in brief.
