The Ninth Symphony, an outstanding work of his seniority, initiated romanticism in music. The last movement of the symphony adopted An" Ode to Jubilation by Schiller, introducing human voice into a symphony for the first time in history and expressing the spirit ofdemocracy and freedom. In the poetry of 18th and 19th centuries, "freedom" and "merriment" are interchangeable; Thus the poem An Ode to Jabilation is actually an odeto freedom. Therefore, from the point of view of freedom in the eyes of Beethoven, this dissertation makes a study on the movement, An Ode to Jubilation. This dissertation falls into four parts. The first part is a historical survey of the time, the society and the family where Beethoven"s view of freedom use generated; and initiatively it is proposed that one of the motives for freedom is the inferior social status of the contemporary artists. The second part studies the commection between Beethoven and Schiller"s poetry; due to similar ideals and experiences, Beethoven, in the apex of creation in his old age, adopted Schiller"s An Ode to Jubilation to voice the ideal of freedom for himself and for all mankind. The third part deals with the background of the composition of The Ninth Symphony and the process of creating the music An Ode to Jubilation. The fourth part elaborates on the introducation of chorus (human voice into a symphony), the characteristic of the musical structure, the questions commanding attention in conduction(language, construction, and preparation), and the initial performance of the work.By the study on An O"de to Jabilation, it can be justified that the whole life of Beethoven evidenced the pursuit of freedom and happiness.
