社论是报纸的灵魂。它是新闻评论中最严肃的一种文体，是代表编辑部发表的对于重大问题的权威而慎重的评论。一篇好的社论文章在所有国家都被认为是议论文中最好的典型的范例。然而，许多英语学习者在阅读中发现：同样是英语社论，在英语国家和中国所出版的报纸之间，除了相同之处以外，仍然存在相当大的差异。那么，二者之间的相同与差异之处各是什么?引起这些差异的原因又是什么?因此，本文将《中国日报》和《纽约时报》这两份报纸中社论的文体特征进行了对比研究。对比的语料为两个十万字左右的语料库，其中的语料都是从这两份报纸的官方网站上搜集到的有关于政治，经济，法律，文化，教育，环境，体育等各方面的社论文章。通过对比，作者发现这两份报纸中社论的文体特征很相似，同时也存在一些差异。这些关于社论的研究不仅对英语学习者来说是很有帮助的，对于新闻记者和语言学者来说也是很有意义的。掌握了这些相同点与不同点，英语学习者、新闻记者和语言学者的英语学习、英语写作及掌握英语的过程就会变的更加有效，更加容易了。
Editorial is the spirit of mess media. It is the most formal writing in news argumentation. It reveals the ideas of the general office of a newspaper that stands for the organ of authority. Good editorials are considered some of the best examples of persuasive writing in all countries; they set standards for written persuasion. However, English texts under different cultural backgrounds also maintain their own writing traditions. Do the English editorials in Chinese newspapers share similar stylistic features or differ much from those in foreign newspapers? Thus a stylistic analysis has been attempted in the present thesis to compare the language features of English editorials between China Daily and New York Times. With the facility of computer software and programs (FOXPRO), two corpora— each about 100,000 words— are built in order to make objective and convincing analysis. The materials are all collected from the official websites of the two newspapers on the Internet from all kinds of fields, including politics, economy, law, society culture, education, environment and sports. Through comparison, it has been perceived that many similarities as well as some differences exist between the editorials in China Daily and New York Times. The research is not only necessary for English learners, but also meaningful for news writers and scholars. Keeping those similarities and differences in mind, they will be more efficient in their learning and understanding of journalistic English.
